All About Probiotics – Gut Health 101

In the second installment of our gut health series, we are focusing on the use and benefits of probiotics! Its use has grown in popularity in recent years as we continue to learn more about the importance of a healthy gut microbiome. Did you know that around 70% of your immune system is located in the gut? Let’s break down when and how to optimize probiotics to maintain proper gut health below!

What are probiotics?

In our first gut health article, we mention the importance of prebiotics. Unlike prebiotics, probiotics are live microorganisms (mostly bacteria and yeast) that may benefit a person’s health. It might sound strange to hear about bacteria being “good” but let’s explore that topic a little further…

Our modern-day Western diet, high in fat and sugar and low in fiber, creates a less diverse microbiota. Lack of healthy bacterial strains can lead to dysbiosis, or an imbalance in microflora. This lack of balance has the potential to lead to not only gut issues (bloating, gas, poor digestion, upset stomach) but may also negatively influence our health further down the line. This is where probiotic supplementation comes in! Through providing the body with good bacteria, it can help to reestablish equilibrium in the gut.

Probiotics can also be obtained through food. Yogurt is one of the best sources. Other options include kefir, sauerkraut, tempeh, kimchi, and kombucha. Find new ways to introduce fermented foods into your diet!

When would I need to take a probiotic?

Probiotics can be consumed by a wide variety of people. For example, they may benefit someone experiencing occasional constipation or digestive discomfort. Additionally, probiotics are a popular supplement to take after antibiotic use. Or, they can benefit anyone looking to strengthen their gut health and digestion. The role of probiotics in overall immune health makes it a perfect addition for everyday use. Consistency is crucial to obtain the full benefits!

For people who are new to probiotics, it is important to note that you may experience bloating or gas. This is the result of changes in the gut microbiota and the crowding out of bad bacteria. However, these side effects usually correct themselves within the first few days or weeks of use!

Are there different kinds to take?

One of the benefits of probiotics is its versatility! Furthermore, they can be taken by people of all ages – with specific types made even for infants and pregnant women. Infant formulas, like Renew Life’s Ultimate Flora Baby Probiotic, contain safe levels of beneficial bacteria available in an easy-to-mix powder form. Gender-specific probiotics are a popular option for those looking to incorporate clinically studied strains pertaining to women or men’s health. For example, Now Foods Women’s Probiotic features three bacteria strains focused on maintaining vaginal health and supporting gastrointestinal regularity. Men may benefit from probiotics, such as Garden of Life’s Raw Probiotics for Men, which includes over 31 different strains to support the unique needs of men.

Besides gender specific options, you can also find a probiotic with additional herbal benefits. Ancient Nutrition SBO Probiotics Mental Clarity combines clinically studied probiotics with organic ashwagandha root, lion’s mane, and bacopa leaf to promote mental clarity and concentration. Furthermore, age-specific probiotics are another example of probiotics to target gut health at any age. Such as Solaray’s Mycrobiome Probiotic 50+, which features a blend of bacterial strains to support the immune system, metabolism, and colon health.

*An important tip we want to share is to take your probiotic on an empty stomach! The efficacy seems to increase when it is not competing in the digestive tract with food. We suggest taking it first thing in the morning or right before bed.
