Most of us have heard the buzz around popular wellness items such as apple cider vinegar and Irish sea moss. Today, we wanted to showcase something different: the benefits of chlorophyll! Keep reading to learn about the potent green pigment that has been receiving receiving tons of praise on social media.
Meet Chlorophyll
Chlorophyll is a natural green pigment that creates the vibrant color of many plants. Leafy greens such as spinach and parsley contain high levels of this valuable pigment, but it's important to note that while leafy greens naturally contain chlorophyll, it isn’t easily broken down and absorbed by the body. That's where supplements can help.
Opt for a Supplement Form
Supplement forms of chlorophyll contain "sodium copper chlorophyllin, which is a form of chlorophyll that is far more bioavailable. 'Bioavailable' means that it's easily used by the body when consumed.
Chlorophyll can be taken in both a liquid or capsule form. (Look out for non-GMO or organic certification!) An easy way to incorporate chlorophyll into your routine is to mix one teaspoon of liquid chlorophyll into eight ounces of water first thing in the morning.
Benefit #1 - Natural Detoxification
Next time you're planning on a detox (we like to do one at least once or twice a year) try chlorophyll instead! In fact, the most well-known benefit of chlorophyll is its detoxifying properties. Studies have shown that chlorophyll promotes detoxification because of its ability to bind to heavy metals. Chlorophyll can also support health blood circulation and oxygen levels in the blood stream.
Benefit #2 - Gives a Boost of Energy
Consider decreasing your caffeine intake and opt for a shot of chlorophyll! Along with promoting blood flow, the super-green also supports healthy levels of red blood cells. An increase in red blood cell count improves oxygen levels, energy levels, and reduces fatigue. Cheers to that!
Benefit #3 - Naturally Deodorizes
Did you know chlorophyll has been called “nature’s natural deodorant”? It can eliminate issues with body odor and bad breath from the inside out. This is made possible by its ability to bind to odor-causing compounds in the body. (It can even be used as a mouthwash, but we always dilute the chlorophyll to avoid any stained teeth!)
Chlorophyll may also support digestion and normal gas production levels by promoting healthy bacteria levels in the gut.
Benefit #4 - Supports Your Skin
Last but not least, this beautiful green pigment's natural detoxifying properties also work on the epidermis and dermis levels of the skin. Chlorophyll may decrease bacteria on the skin which plays a big role in acne. It also may support healthy inflammation levels. (High inflammation levels are associated with skin break outs and redness.)
Another skin benefit of chlorophyll is its replenishing properties for sun-related aging. This is because chlorophyll contains generous levels of Vitamins A, C, E and K, which have all been shown to support proper skin health and collagen production.
