In this article, join us to learn how to keep your skin hydrated all winter long! It's so easy to become dehydrated over the winter. The air dries out, and so do your insides and your skin. This can result in rough, ashy patches, and itchy irritated skin that no one is safe from!
Water, Water, Water
The first and most obvious way to hydrate your skin is to hydrate from the inside out. Just because it's cold out, and you don't feel as thirsty doesn't mean you need any less water. In fact, you should be drinking half an ounce or more for each pound you weigh, daily. If you're getting bored of water, try adding some fun-flavored electrolyte packets like these Strawberry-Lemonade ones from Nuun.
Lather in Ceramide Lotion
Ceramides compose 50% of your skin's epidermis (the lop layer of skin). They hold your skin together and, as the skin's moisture barrier, prevent foreign substances from soaking into the skin as easily. According to Healthline's Everything You Should Know About Using Ceramides, "[Ceramides] lock moisture into your skin, which helps prevent dryness and irritation. It may also help protect your epidermis from environmental damage. These benefits may have anti-aging effects." You can add ceramides to your skin care routine naturally, using Ceramedx Body Lotion, and/or Moisturizing Cream from Earth Science into the mix. We've tried these lotions ourselves, and confirm that they are winter-approved.
TIPS: Use directly after the shower while your skin is patted dry, but still slightly wet for added moisture. You can also apply the Moisturizing Cream to your hands and put on gloves while it soaks into your skin overnight.
Supplement to Support Skin Care
Support healthy skin moisture with a little help from your supplemental friends. The main supplements we like that support skin hydration include Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and Collagen. Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the body, as it lubricates the eyes and joints. It also is great when used topically or when taken as a supplement. NOW Hydration Rescue supplement has us excited because of its patented Hyabest® Hyaluronic Acid. Another HA product, this one well-loved by staff, is Hyalogic Hyalouronic Acid Synthovial SEVEN. Add to an 8 oz. glass of water for increased hydration, or drop directly into the mouth, for increased moisture in the body's joints and skin.
Humidify Your Space
If it can take the static out of your clothes, it's sure to help with your skin as well. Rather than allowing dry air to suck all the moisture out of your skin, hydrate the air and feel the difference in your skin and hair. A clean humidifier can also help support sinus health. But, "well-cleaned" is the key phrase! Nobody wants to steam a bunch of moldy water into the air they're breathing. Also note that a diffuser is different from a humidifier, as diffusers are purely used for scent diffusion, while humidifiers get a more considerable amount of water into the air.
Face First
Last but not least, don't forget to show your face some love this winter! We love a good face oil, like rosehip seed oil or argan oil, as well as Derma E's whole Hydrating line. This line is infused with vitamins, antioxidants, and botanicals that support soothing skin, and allowing it to soak up all the moisturizing goodness.
With the help of our tips, we wish you the most comfortable and beautiful skin you've had this season! Stay hydrated, our friends, and don't forget to visit us in-store or online for all these essentials. (Except the humidifier, you'll need to get that elsewhere.)
