Why Are People Boiling Lettuce Water on TikTok?

We love the internet, but occasionally there are some trends that make us scratch our heads. Making lettuce tea, by pouring boiling water over fresh romaine lettuce is one of those latter trends. So, why are people boiling lettuce water?

It helps you sleep... right?

The claim is that romaine lettuce aids in sleep, based upon the fact that many lettuces contain lactucin and lactucarium, "...two compounds which can help with sleep. However, they need to be present in large quantities, more than one could get out of a few lettuce leaves," says Dr. Richard Brown*. At the moment, there is no research that proves that such small amounts of lettuce, much less, lettuce water are likely to have an effect on sleep in humans. While it's likely not harmful to the body, it might not be as effective as one might wish if they suffer from serious lack of sleep.

So, what is effective? One's personal habits have a lot to do with the quality of sleep they get. Are they managing stress well? Are they using their phones and other harmful blue light screens late at night? Are they properly tired from the day's exercise? Or, are they overly energized from exercising too late at night, and consuming caffeine too late in the day? Are they using low lighting in the evening, and sunlight in the morning--to support the body's circadian (sleep) rhythms and healthy sleep? Are they eating healthy or a bunch of sugary, processed foods? All of these factors and more can effect one's sleep habits.

The real tea...

At the same time, there are still supplemental solutions out there for folks who need extra sleep support. Chamomile tea has been used casually to promote restful sleep for a long time! Valerian root is another favorite, which we carry as supplements, blends, and Nighty Night Extra Tea (as seen above)! Calm Sleep magnesium is a great option to support sleep, and address magnesium deficiency. Finally, for short term use, melatonin is a customer favorite. These are just to name a few, so be sure to visit us in-store to see all our amazing natural sleep supporters, and talk to our friendly associates to find the right one for you!

Lettuce water may not be harmful to the body, but it might also not produce the desired effect when you need great sleep. For the best sleep, people still have to do the work of cultivating healthy sleep habits. Additionally, visit our stores for help. Don't forget to talk to your doctor about all your supplement choices, and ask for their help if problems persist!
